A member of Hometown Band since 1995, I
studied classical and flamenco guitar for two years as a young
teenager. My real love though is singing and I performed with my best
friend (who played piano) continually through high school and
college--mostly in night clubs where we had to "sneak
in"; as we were underage! I also performed in high school and
college plays (mostly musicals). After college I got sidetracked by a
career! When I was 35 I realized that earning money as a computer
programmer was not fulfilling my need for music.
At age 35 I retired and took a job as full-time volunteer technical
director for a major community theater in the Pacific Northwest. We had
an intimate 100 seat indoor facility and a huge outdoor amphitheater.
Recently, the outdoor amphitheater was purchased by a religious
organization for which I acted as technical liaison for two years. I
have been involved with over 100 shows for various theaters in the
region. As I had sufficient financial resources, I was able to donate
my time for all these. I not only designed and built sets, I also
performed (I was invariably cast as the villain!)
In 1995 I was working with a volunteer crew to renovate a very old
building returning it to its original state as a musical theater. It
was extremely dirty and dusty and all the volunteers got very sick. I
got laryngitis and could not sing for over six months. I was seriously
hurting!
As a very young child I was convinced my name was "Eddie stop
drumming"! During the time I had laryngitis I happen to be in
the local
music store picking up microphones for the theater. They had a
beautiful set of Yamaha drums sitting there taking up a huge amount of
floor space (it was a 10 piece double bass set). It had a $4500 price
tag. In my froggy voice (I could just barely talk) I made some comment
to the manager like "If you would take the $2000 I just got back from
the IRS I would buy those drums." He said "If you can take them today
you have a deal!" I did not own a vehicle large enough to haul all
those drums but I called a friend who came down with a van. I have been
playing drums ever since. I took lessons for quite a while but started
auditioning within two weeks of buying my drums. I have never failed to
be chosen to perform after an audition. At one performance a bandleader
came up and asked me if I would like to play in his band.
That band was the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard ceremonial band--Farragut
Brass Band, a formal British Brass Band. I have been playing with them
for many years now, often as their sole percussionist. The tuba
player with that band is the conductor of Hometown Band--he asked me to
play with his band as third percussion or first
when needed; I have been playing with Hometown Band ever since. Most of
the time I bounce around between first, second and third percussion
though I do not read pitched percussion music like bells, chimes or
timpani.
In the summer of 2010 I started the last big construction phase of my new house
(which was built almost entirely by Hometown Band drummer Bob Nash and myself).
This project involved wrapping a large deck around the northern end of the house
bringing all entryways up to grade thus wheelchair accessible. Here is the result
